| KUTTANADU
Kuttanad, called the rice bowl o f Kerala because of her wealth of paddy crops, is
at the very heart of the backwaters. The scenic countryside of Kuttanad with its
shimmering waterways also has a rich crop of banana, cassava and yam. This is
perhaps the only region in the world where farming is done 1.5 to 2 m below sea
level. Inland waterways which flow above land level are an amazing feature of this region.

 Alleppey remains
prominent on the tourist trail as one of the major centers for backwater boat trips. Served
by ferries to Quilon and Kottayam in particular. Sweeping network of canals honeycombing
the town of Alleppey has earned for the place its sobriquet "The Venice of the east".
The sweeping network of canals, honey-combing the town of Alleppey (Alappuzha) has earned
for the place its sobriquet - "The Venice of the East." Small, low-slung country boats are
the taxis of this waterland..

It is a heart-warming sight to see them carry a motley assemblage of cycles, goats, fisherwomen
with cane baskets, school children, toddy-tappers with their knives and pots, duennas in white
with gold earrings, Syrian Christian priests and a bare-chested boatman apiece.
